Hallelujah a Cypriot Chef de Cabinet for EU Commissioner (actually 2…)
I’ve recently returned from Brussels, again, where I heard great news… A Cypriot has been appointed Head of Cabinet of the Cypriot Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou. I say “hallelujah” because this should have been the case right from the start, despite all the EU blah blah about the Commissioners not being there to serve their national interests!
The man appointed only in January is Yiannos Asimakis, whom I know since my days as Brussels correspondent. Then he was at the Perm Rep for the CY Finance Ministry. He was excellent: a good character, serious, knew his job, could explain to journalists and was great at building relations.
Before I go on to explain why I think this appointment is important let me tell you there is yet another Cypriot heading a Cabinet, that of the Greek Commissioner. She is Themis Christophidou, with long experience within the EC as she was working in Brussels before Cyprus joined. Themis had also served in the Cypriot Commissioner’s cabinet.
Now back to where I had started. The EU, especially the Commission, always try to convince us national interests do not come into play in daily work. Not convinced. Not only am I not convinced, but I think it’s more effective if the Commissioner’s Head of Cabinet is from her/his country. Not only they speak the same language and come from the same culture, making communication easier, but also they can play a more substantial role in the effort to bring the EU closer to the citizens of their country. They know people, can build relations, understand what is at stake, etc etc etc. Especially in those early stages, I believe it was really necessary, not that it’s not necessary now!
Actually, when Cyprus joined the EU, our first Commissioner Marcos Kyprianou had chosen a Cypriot to head his Cabinet – You know who that was? None other than Kornelios Korneliou, our present Perm Rep! Kyprianou knew what he was doing and why it was important, but unfortunately one big brain in Nicosia and another in Brussels blocked the appointment. So despite the fact that the EC had agreed and even visiting cards were printed (see card), the appointment fell through!
So today, 10 years later we finally have a Cypriot Head of Cabinet.
Yianno, all the best. You’re up to the job…and more…

Απογοητευμένη και θυμωμένη επειδή σε αντίθεση με εσένα και το κόμμα σου όταν καμιά φορά σκέφτομαι τα χάλια αυτού του τόπου και ποιος θα μπορούσε να φέρει μια αλλαγή πλείστα άτομα που μου έρχονται στο νου είναι γυναίκες! Αλλά, Νίκο, προφανώς εσύ δεν τις βλέπεις αφού μόλις πρόσφατα ανακάλυψες ότι έχουν τη δυνατότητα να σκέφτονται…ή πως ακριβώς ήταν που μας το είπες;
Άκουσα πως χθες στη Βουλή μας ζήτησες συγνώμη, αλλά… too little too late όπως λέμε εμείς οι αγγλομαθείς.

All the (Cyprus) President’s men – Nico, we women are angry
Men in meeting – Photo PIO
Nico, I am disappointed.
Actually, Nico, I’m also angry.
Disappointed and angry because when I think of this country and who could help it come out of the mess it’s in, it’s mainly women that spring to mind.
Οbviously something you and your political party did not see.
Nico, you obviously didn’t see these women because you’ve only recently discovered they can actually think, as you had said…How exactly had you said that?
It’s a shame Nico because your party DISY always appeared to be more progressive on social issues, including gender.
You’ve disappointed and angered us women, Nico. Clearly when you were dividing the ministries you didn’t set down criteria so we’ve ended up with quite a few…dodgy (I won’t characterize further) men, instead of women.
I heard that yesterday in your speech before Parliament, you apologised. Too little, too late.
However, Nico, because we women are more fair, think more, are more generous and at the end of the day more rounded people…I leave my anger aside and express the hope that at least you will handle other crucial issues this country is facing in a better way!
We will be watching you…and we have woken up!
Note: I am usually very proper in how I address people. However, in no uncertain terms the new President elect of Cyprus has told us…«just call me Nico»!
